Perfect Blue Wedding Flowers

Now that you've decided on blue wedding flowers for your wedding party, it's time to figure out what flowers you'd like.

Blue is a really popular colour for weddings and if your bridesmaids are going to be wearing blue, then complementing them with blue flowers can look fantastic.

The selection of blue flowers can be a bit more limited than with say pinks, but you can still have gorgeous wedding flowers. I should know because the colour scheme for my wedding was blue!

First of all, think about what season you're getting married in - this will dictate what flowers are in season. For an idea of what's available when, here's a rough guide (as you can see some flowers are available across several seasons, depending on the variety):

Spring:

To make your blue flowers go further, why not pair them with other colours?

  • White flowers can cool the overall effect.
  • Orange is complementary to blue and warms it up.
  • Yellow also works with blue

Think of dark blue irises with their flash of gold. Plus it's easy to add cheaper flowers or spray to bulk out your flowers and reduce the overall cost.

For my flowers, I put blues with lilacs, purples and cool pinks as I love that sector of the colour spectrum. A swatch of fabric from the bridesmaid dresses is very helpful when it comes to choosing your flowers. Remember your flowers don't have to match the exact shade, they can complement it instead.

Your florist will be able to advise you on the availability and prices of particular flowers. Remember that although many flowers are available all year round, those that are outside their normal growing season will have been imported from some far flung location, and this adds to their price.

If you want to get out of season blue flowers an alternative to paying through the nose for fresh flowers is to buy silk flowers which can be purchased at any stage as they won't spoil over time.

If you've chosen to do your own flowers, you'll need to do your homework as to what flowers are available around the time of your wedding, and where you can source them from (e.g. wholesaler, flower market, even the supermarket or the garden!). If you allow yourself enough time, it’s very achievable.Check out my articles on how to make bouquets, cheap bouquets, and wedding bouquet flower choice for some helpful hints and tips.

So don't panic! You will be able to have beautiful blue wedding flowers for your big day.
